The Biggest Style Dos and Don'ts of 2009

1. Going pantless in public.
90% say it was a DON’T. Unless you’re Lady Gaga, the majority of glamour.com readers say, it’s one big, chilly no-no.

2. The year’s metallic dress trend
77% of glamour.com readers say it was a DO. (23% Say it was a DON’T.)

3. Dude DON’T: Jerks love tattoo tees!
Weird coincidence: This year the rudest dudes wore these loud shirts. We get it guys, you’re not shy!

4. Drew Barrymore’s kooky style—a total DO!
In a sea of same-hair, same-dress, same-style clones, she’s a wackadoo original. Love that.

5. Shimmery dresses: Love them!

The Vegas-style glitz was everywhere this year, and sequins were such a DO. Beyoncé looks so glam in hers.

6. Gaga getups
Gotta give the lady props for being the style risk-taker of the year—but DON’T try this at home, kids!

7. Nail polish-red jackets
Anne Hathaway, we DO heart your crisp, bright coat.

8. Blue dresses: DO get one!
Great color, great shape on Katherine Heigl.

9. Rockin’ DO of the year: Fancy leather
Suddenly it’s limo-worthy, like on Ashlee Simpson. Who needs a Harley?

10. Socks’n’sandals
You say it’s a DON’T. They were all over the runway (and even this magazine), but you voted them a no-no on glamour.com. As commenter stylefox wrote, this “defeats the whole purpose” of open-toed shoes.

11. Still mad for plaid
Checks are here to stay (and luckily they’re a DO). Cute shirt, Jen Garner.

12. Curve-a-thon: Ready, Set, DO!
When an eat-your-heart-out number is in order, a body-hugging mini does the job better than anything else. Just stay away from see-through fabric if you’re going short and clingy.

13. Wild nails
We’re loving the not-found-in-nature colors, but go short. (Claws are a DON’T—and how is the bathroom even possible?)
14. Fried hair—it’s forever a DON’T!
The things we do to our hair these days—extensions, extreme dye jobs, overironing, overstyling—whoa. No wonder it’s coming out so crispy. Conditioner, please!

15. Thigh-high boots
Over-the-knee boots can be cute, like on the girl at left. But unless they’re part of your sexy-vixen Halloween costume, showing too much skin pushes them into DON’T territory. Remember, boots don’t count as pants.

16. Leather: A mega DO trend
The tough-girl material looked great on celebs and non-celebs alike. (But leather leg warmers? That’s just crazy.)

17. Statement tights: A daring DO
We promise you don’t have to dress as all over bold to wear them. The newest colors can give even a simple outfit an instant 2010 upgrade.

18.Humongous headbands are a DON’T.
Maybe Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf can pull off a ginormous bow, but 61 percent of glamour.com readers think they’re over the top for the rest of us.

19. Raiding your boyfriend’s closet: Such a DO!
Equal-opportunity dressing: It’s the trend that had guys everywhere screaming, “Hey, where’s my shirt?”

20. Cardi over a dress: What a DO!
They’re a godsend year-round. Thanks for the idea, Mrs. O.

21.And the Don’t-est DON’T of all: The full-body unitard
But we DO respect her chutzpah!

O.k., I have to add some comments. I totally agree that the unitard (or catsuit in some circles) is NEVER A GOOD IDEA....NO MATTER HOW GREAT THE BODY. While some plaid pieces are great, I personally don't care for the shirts........I don't like that "lumberjack-ish'' look. Furthermore, I've seen some sock and sandal combinations that work, but it's usually on the runway, and my, my, my, the long, over-the-top curved nails are just plain ugly! Lastly, while Drew Barrymore is hot and cold with her style, I'm loving that black dress!
