At almost 6 feet tall — without heels — Shena Moulton commands attention. Having walked for Calvin Klein (twice), Marc by Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi and Louis Vuitton, this 16-year-old already has established herself as a model on the rise. Now, gearing up for her first full fashion season, look for her to make a strong showing on the most exclusive catwalks.
How did you get into modeling?
“I was discovered at my school. I always wanted to be a model because my sister was one back in Jamaica. One day this guy walked up to me and was like, ‘Oh my god! You’re so amazing!’ He said I should enter the Fashion Face of the Caribbean competition. I entered and won! And was signed by Muse on the spot. I was the youngest in the competition.”
You’ve already walked some impressive shows. What’s it like being on the runway with top models?
“I’m always so excited about it because it’s my dream. It’s my passion. And I’m looking at these girls and I’m right beside them, and I’m like, ‘Wow. My dream has finally come true.’”
Do you have any funny runway moments?
“Kind of. I was at a runway rehearsal and [giggles], mmmmh, I was looking at this guy and fell off the stage!”
If you weren’t a model, what would you be?
“An actress. I would have liked to be in the black-and-white movies because of the drama, the emotions. Or comedy because I can really act!”
What do you do when you’re not modeling?
“I like to take pictures. I like to take Polaroids and fun pictures. I take them with my Blackberry since my digital camera got stolen.”
What’s on your iPod?
“I love Rihanna, BeyoncĂ©, Keyshia Cole and Alicia Keys.”
Is there a model that inspires you?
“I look up to two models: Naomi Campbell and Chanel Iman. Chanel Iman is unique and beautiful. And she’s someone you see and think, Oh, that girl is doing well. And lately Sessilee [Lopez] is so good. She came to Jamaica. She and Georgie [Badiel]. I love Georgie because she’s so sweet. She’s like my big sister. She looks out for me. She’s like, ‘Oh my god, you’re here alone?’ They’re always asking me, ‘Are you OK?’”
What’s it like being one of the youngest models on the runway?
“I was afraid and shy, but now I got over that and I have picked up from there!”
What are your “must-have” beauty products?
I don’t normally wear makeup — only when I’m in a show.
You just turned sweet 16. What did you do for your birthday?
“I got a surprise party! And I got my Blackberry phone, and I got my ears pierced! My agent back in Jamaica planned a surprise party with my mom, and my sister was in on it. I was like, ‘You’re not my sister anymore because you didn’t tell me!’”
Is it hard being on your own, at 16, in the city?
“Not really — only sometimes, like when I get lost!”
What are your modeling goals?
“Just to aim high!”
