Fluvia Lacerda isn’t your typical plus size model. For starters, she once worked as a nanny after immigrating to the United States from Brazil to pursue a better life. Little did she know that one day she would be called “the plus size Gisele Bundchen.”
More than her heritage, though, the thing that truly sets Fluvia apart is her dedication to the very community that her image uplifts. “I don't go home after a photo shoot and [forget] about everything related to what I do for a living,” says Lacerda. “Modeling has led me to meet many women who have struggled with being told they have no value in society. Representing those women has a far higher meaning to me than just a paycheck.” It’s no wonder, then, that she was voted Full Figured Fashion Week’s Plus Model of the Year, an honor that she doesn’t take lightly.
At size 18, Fluvia is curvier than many plus size models in today’s industry, but that’s something she’s more than proud of. She’s no stranger to breaking down barriers - she was the first (and only ) plus size model to grace the pages of Playboy Brazil (or any Playboy, for that matter).
Next up for this unstoppable force? More campaigns, more editorials, and a summer full of work in Europe. She also has plans to start her own plus size line in her native country. Though her accomplishments are innumerable, Fluvia is most proud of her message. “The best result out of all the hard work I have achieved is knowing that I have liberated the minds of so many women who have struggled with a negative body image their entire lives.”

The ideal of female beauty is changing register. Or perhaps it never really changed. Confirming a renewed love for curves, for roundness, come the classifications.
Like the one that crowned J.Lo “The most beautiful woman in the world”. While the magazines are fighting over interviews with actresses who embody a curvy, Mediterranean beauty, like Monica Bellucci, castings of curvy models and competitions dedicated to “plus size” women are following one another. Can this finally be the sign of the decline of an only penitential fashion? If the eternal preference of men for a woman with curves were not to suffice, now there is also love towards oneself, a indefeasible feeling of wellbeing that every woman wishes to maintain and show the world.
And if Beyoncé or Rihanna are to be considered the emblems of sensuality, then everything becomes more clear. Homologated models? Strict regimes? Ideal sizes? Concepts to gather up and lock away into a wardrobe of the past. Beauty does not follow univocal models, but welcomes differences. That fashion interprets for a real woman.

My take? Diversity is always a beautiful thing!

Two curvy women launch a rebel magazine
ue Thomanson and Sarah Kenny were tired of going through women magazines filled with images and messages harmful for their self-confidence and for the consideration of themselves. So they decided to create a small independent publishing house and publish Beautiful, a magazine that is as glamorous as any glossy magazine, but that focuses exclusively on curvy women.
Born after the experiment of Just as Beautiful, the magazine, now more structured, is an answer to all those women that want to see a curvy and natural body type represented and talked about.
The editorial lines are very clear: Beautiful publishes exclusively images of plus size models (starting from a size 44); there is no space for diets or weight loss; beauty in all its diversity is celebrated and the use of programs to manipulate the images and make women look thinner are forbidden.
The summer issue, the cover of which is dedicated to Adele, can be bought directly from their website, or in Evans stores across the UK.

I love the idea of this magazine and who/what it represents. Just as our world is diverse with various ethnicities, so are we as women and lovers of fashion. Kudos to the ladies for such a timely production!
