Thru the Lens: Fashion Photographer Piper Carter

A fashion photographer and co-owner of 5E Gallery in Detroit. Carter was the first African-American woman to shoot for French Vogue and British Elle. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times, US Weekly, and other noted publications.

Piper shares her style and fashion sense:

STYLE SENSE: “My [look] is simple and organic but I am a huge funk diva at heart,” she says, citing Erykah Badu, Lisa Bonet, Zoë Kravitz, and socialite Genevieve Jones as her favorite fashionistas.

IN HER CLOSET: Carter adores designers with Detroit roots such as Tracy Reese, Eugenia Paul, and Femilia Couture. She also has a deep affection for Charlotte Ronson, Vashtie Kola, and the late Alexander McQueen.

Fashion Photography: Sascha Mazzucco

At just 16 years old, Sascha Mazzucco is already showing promise as a fashion photographer. And why wouldn’t he—it’s in his blood.

His father, Raphael, is one of the world’s most sought-after and respected photographers, best known for his Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue covers and spreads. And mother Lisa-Marie is a classical-music photographer, as well as a former model and makeup artist.

Though it seems only natural that the Montauk teen would pick up a camera and follow suit, music was his first passion (he plays rhythm guitar in an East Hampton-based rock band called Renegade). It took an off-the-cuff photo shoot at his home a year and a half ago to ignite a flame he didn’t know existed. Now he’s shooting look books for clothing store Blue&Cream and flying to Kenya to snap location photos for the new Shompole Lodge brochure.

Whereas his peers might crack under such enormous pressure, Sascha takes it all in stride. Instead of spending hours agonizing over the composition of each shot, he prefers a simple point-and-shoot approach. The result? A raw beauty that’s especially evident in the portraits taken around Montauk on the following pages, captured with a simple click of the shutter. Look for more of Montauk’s majestic beauty in next week’s issue of Hamptons.
