The Most Popular Winter Pedicure Shades?

Though your feet may currently be cocooned inside a pair of woolly tights, winter is still no time to neglect your toes—after all, you never know when a peep-toed evening out might present itself, not to mention a last-minute long-weekend escape to sunnier shores. Vogue asked the top nail spas coast to coast for the season’s most popular polishes—and shades of burgundy and bordeaux, longtime winter staples, came up a distinct minority. Instead, hazy purples and blues are having a big moment—in demand from Philadelphia to Seattle—while at TenOverTen in New York, pale pink is making an unexpected comeback. Here, the most wanted pedicure shades across the country.

The 11 Most Iconic Rock Star Hairstyles?

AMY WINEHOUSE

The late Winehouse's retro voice led to five Grammy wins, and her wild beehive—created originally with her own back-combed hair, but later with a growing mountain of hairpieces—was mimicked by her UK fans and by models in Chanel's pre-fall 2008 show.

ANNIE LENNOX

Lennox's military-short buzz cut was feminized by extreme colors. She's had Marilyn Monroe bleach blonde and may have originated the orange-red later adopted by Garbage's Shirley Manson, Florence and the Machine's Florence Welch, and Paramore's Hayley Williams.

TINA TURNER

Turner's lion's manelike wig was as fierce as her voice on "What's Love Got to Do With It," the smash-hit single from her album Private Dancer that spent 28 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. A childhood friend said Turner vowed at a young age to one day "have long hair and some big hips and big legs."

PATTI SMITH

Smith cut her disheveled shag herself in the 1970s, using photos of Rolling Stone Keith Richards as inspiration. When she debuted her androgynous cut at Andy Warhol's Factory, "I couldn't believe all of the fuss over it," Smith wrote in her memoir, Just Kids. "Though I was still the same person, my social status suddenly elevated."

DEBBIE HARRY

The blonde behind Blondie, Harry cut and dyed her own hair with drugstore supplies when the band was on the road in the '70s and '80s: "My cuts and color were purely emotional—a combination of frustration, expedience, and creativity," she says. "I never used a toner; I would just strip the color."

NICO

The one-time model wowed crowds at Velvet Underground shows with her haunting voice and chiseled beauty, buried under a thick fringe.

HAYLEY WILLIAMS

The 22-year-old Paramore singer's bright hair colors belie the dark moodiness of her band's biggest hits. Williams once said that she wanted to try "every hair color"; she's already done blue, pink, purple, orange, and blonde.

GRACE JONES

The flat-top Jones wore on her 1980 album, Warm Leatherette, was her own brainchild but was cut by her New York City neighbor hairstylist Christiaan, who lived across the courtyard. "She yelled out of the window at midnight—she wanted a haircut," he says. He used a safety razor to create the look, and overnight it became Jones's signature.

CHAN MARSHALL

Marshall, more widely known as Cat Power, brought a 1960s Marianne Faithfull look—blunt, chunky bangs—and a jazzy voice to the indie-rock scene, starting in the late 90s. By 2006, she was featured in ads for Chanel jewelry.

JOAN JETT

After Kristen Stewart got Jett's famous shag in The Runaways, the rocker herself revisited the look. The "Bad Reputation" singer's updated cut is "not as short on top, not as straight, and it's a little more blended as a shag," says her hairstylist Sally Hershberger.

PINK

Pink's bratty attitude on her M!ssundaztood album made her a star, and the short, spiky hair that matched her name set her apart in 2001, when the music scene was ruled by pop tarts.

Certainly there are more, but there a two ladies that I would like to add to the list. One of my absolute favorites....Carole King....what a beautiful head of natural curls! The other? The incomparable Nona Hendryx. I would definitely describe her look as edgy and avant garde with a dash of punk.

Shopping Allure

THE ALLURE OF SHOPPING: A comment Donatella Versace made to Linda Wells a few years ago got the Allure editor in chief thinking. “Donatella told me she buys everything the magazine recommends every month,” Wells recalled. The idea of marrying Allure’s editorial content with e-commerce was something that intrigued Wells. “We know that women have always shopped from the magazine,” she said, adding that many of Allure’s 700,000 monthly online readers bring pages torn from the magazine to stores. Now they won’t have to. Allure.com on Wednesday launched e-commerce through Quidsi, the parent of Soap.com and BeautyBar.com.

“Allure chose us because we’re able to offer mass and prestige beauty,” said BeautyBar.com site director Katina Mountanos. The integration of content and commerce is intended to be seamless. Shoppers reading an expert review can click a “buy now” button to purchase the product and a shopping cart will start to fill, following them through the Web site. At checkout, consumers are taken to Beautybar.com. A product finder tool, driven by thousands of Allure product review pages, offers personalized recommendations. Wells said the relaunched Web site will keep a firm line between “church and state” — advertising and editorial. “We went about this very carefully and very thoughtfully,” she said. “Our integrity and independence is our editorial identity. In the magazine we cover products that are advertised and products that aren’t. It’s the same with the e-commerce.”

90 Years of Chanel No. 5

Marilyn Monroe said: "What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5..." She didn’t know then, but this would go down in history: it’s a quote that links two legendary icons, the actress Monroe herself and the mythic Chanel No. 5.

The perfume is a timeless symbol of sophisticated elegance, one which has lost none of its allure. It’s reached its ninetieth birthday and it’s wearing really well: still on top and still adored.

When Mademoiselle Coco Chanel created it in 1921, she said: “I don’t want any rose or lily smells – I want an elaborate perfume.” And she got it, thanks to the talent of the chemist Ernest Beaux. He perfectly summed up Coco’s desires and spirit, producing an ideal fragrance with a rich bouquet that includes around 80 ingredients, including ylang-ylang, Grasse jasmin and Rose of May.

A favourite of the stars – Lauren Hutton and Catherine Deneuve to name two – today Chanel No. 5 has the delicate face of Audrey Tautou as its testimonial.

My Life: A New Fragrance from Mary J. Blige

Over the decades, much has been made of what is in a fragrance bottle — hope or science? For Mary J. Blige, it’s transformation.

“I wanted my fragrance to be something special for my female fans,” said Blige of her new fragrance with Carol’s Daughter, My Life, named for her landmark 1994 recording of the same name. The album represented a major turning point in Blige’s life and by using it as a reference, she is attempting to encapsulate her decadelong transformation and triumph.

While the My Life scent may be meant to represent everyday life, Blige and Carol’s Daughter are breaking the bonds of traditional prestige fragrance retailing by choosing to launch My Life solely on HSN on July 31. Blige is an investor in Carol’s Daughter, which also is a break with industry practice.

Blige, who worked with Firmenich to create the scent, concedes fragrance development was new to her, but she did have a secret weapon: Pamela Baxter, president and chief executive officer of LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics North America. Blige’s husband and manager, Kendu Isaacs, has an uncle who is married to Baxter, who Blige affectionately calls Aunt Pam.

“We’ve been family for years,” Blige said, before adding about developing a fragrance, “I’ve never done it, but it was so much fun because I have a keen sense of smell. I knew exactly what I wanted and would ask for an incense smell, a musk smell, a wood smell. I also wanted florals, but edgy florals. Every day they would bring me blotters to test — after a while, everything started to smell the same, so I had to pull back.”

Once she got the juice to an early stage, Blige shared it with Baxter. “Aunt Pam came to our house for Christmas during that time, and I said, ‘Pam, I love it, but something’s causing me to hate it.’ What is that smell — there’s too much of it. And Pam said it was wood. I got on the phone right away and said ‘take the wood out!’” Blige said with a laugh.

Baxter noted that Blige is studious about every task she tackles. “She likes to know what she is talking about,” said Baxter. “She is not one to let anyone manage her life. She wants to learn everything from top to bottom.”

Despite the assist from Baxter, Steve Stoute, lead investor in and chairman of Carol’s Daughter, is quick to stress that Blige had free rein to create whatever she wanted to. “No one said to Mary, ‘this is what the industry likes, this is what will sell.’ It was completely Mary’s creation, and she went through six different iterations before it was perfect. And that way, it really has become her fragrance. The endorser becomes the author.”

The scent’s top notes are of gardenia petals, Bartlett pear and white freesia; the heart is of tuberose, blooming jasmine, gold lily and apricot flower, and the drydown is of cashmere woods, praline, sesame and incense. It will retail for $46 for 1.7 oz. and will be sold with a clutch purse.

While some high-profile names are fine with smelling a final scent and cashing a check, Blige isn’t one of them. “I have to be involved,” she said. “Because when your name is attached to something, and it’s not good, that’s your name. So I prefer a good name rather than vanity and riches.

“At the end of the day, it’s for me,” she continued. “So if I look ridiculous and not know what I’m talking about and not know what’s in my own fragrance, it doesn’t look good to people. When I was doing the [public service announcement for her charity, filmed earlier in the day on set] out there, I was saying education is power. That’s what I mean. It is powerful to sit here and talk to you and tell you I know what’s in my fragrance. I was there, putting it together.”

(WWD)

From what's stated here, it sounds as though this is going to be one of those soft, floral fragrances. It contains two of my favorite elements, Jasmine and gardenia. I'm actually surprised that it's has taken Mary so long to throw her hat into the ring with regard to fashion or another venture. She is well known for her chic and stylish fashion sense, and I personally thought that she would have developed a clothing line at some point.

I'm sure she didn't want to just jump into to anything without the necessary research and processes. This very well could be the beginning of things to come, as she has cemented her place as a well loved artist, so I can imagine that the time is right for her to segue into something new. Being a lover of floral scents, I look forward to getting my hands on a bottle!

Thandie Newton is the New Face of Olay

In a brilliant move, Olay just tapped the always-luminous Thandie Newton to be the face of their Total Effects collection. An advertising campaign starring Newton will launch in the UK to celebrate the brand's tenth anniversary there. In an interview with British fashion magazine Grazia, the mother-of-two gushed about how fabulous Olay Total Effects is for busy working moms, like herself: "When filming, my working day is hectic, so trying to strike a balance between work, a family and time for myself can be challenging. Topshop to Launch Makeup

The launch of a new make-up range from high street giant Topshop has been whispered about in beauty circles for some months now.

Last week, a few members of the press got a first look at the collection, but the air of mystery – and excitement – surrounding it continues as it’s being kept under wraps until closer to its launch date in May. What we can tell you is that it’s a huge range, comprising a basic set of products in an impressive array of colours that will be in store (and online) permanently, supplemented by special seasonal, trend-led sets that will be available for limited periods.

Henri Bendel Launches New Signature Scents

I was a fan of the previous Henri Bendel signature line (the rare mimosa was my favorite) so I'm curious about the new line from the luxury department store Henri Bendel. Last year Henri Bendel decided to stop selling clothing and focus on accessories and beauty products. The store has launched a new line of six signature scents with very tempting scent descriptions. Rose & Oud is described as girly but glam with strawberry leaves, violet, sugary pink jasmine and a balance of oud. Gardenia & Vanilla is a a subtle and soft scent that gently seduces with peach blossoms, lily of the valley, fresh gardenia, and vanilla. A little peppier is the Persian Lime & Pepper which has notes of Rio red grapefruit, bold black pepper and sweet-scented basil. Sunny citrus enlivens Orange Blossom & Jasmine which has sugary Clementine, tangy tangerine, and bouquets of Sumatra lily. Patcchouli fleur and lotus blossoms give Incense & Musk its exotic profile.Grapefruit & Vetiver is tangy and tart but balanced by cooling cypress and mellowed musk. All the scents sell for $65 for a 50 ml Eau de Parfum.

Chanel's New Lifting/Firming Skincare Line

The four products in Chanel's new Ultra Correction Lift Collection contain a resin from the Manila elemi tree, often used to heal skin in traditional Chinese medicine. The Lifting Firming Day Cream SPF 15, for example, is described as "lush cream, luxuriously textured and delicately scented, delivers a very soft, matte finish, with ultimate comfort, for a visible lifting effect." So, does the line deliver? I can't say (way out of my price range!), but according to O the Oprah Magazine beauty editor Jenny Bailly, "Don't expect gravity-defying results, but the Lifting Firming Day Cream SPF 15 and the Lifting Firming Night Cream will leave your skin temporarily plumper and firmer." The total of six products range from $85 - $225, including the four Lift Collection items as well a Lifting Firming Day Fluid SPF 15 and a Sculpting Firming Concentrate.

Iman Luxury Eyeliner

The holiday season is in full swing but if you're like me you're heading to almost every party on your list straight from work. My solution: wear black, stash a few fab accessories in my bag and ditch the opaque stockings! My greatest trick however came straight from Iman. I caught up with the "chic one" over espresso early one morning at her Manhattan digs and she gave yours truly one of her sparkly eyeliners and said: "Darling... just apply a little to the inner corner of your eyes." Talk about one glamorous stroke--now I'm working all four shades! Just pair one with a smoky eye and you're sure to be the talk of the party.

"Baby's Got Blue Eyes"

I’m not going to kid you—blue eye makeup isn’t an easy thing to carry off. It’s a look whose past moments are still so memorable there’s almost no way to wear it now that makes it seem new. Two years ago, nevertheless, I had a moment in Sephora: I got seduced by the loveliest shade of Nars metallic aqua liquid liner and just had to have it.

I loved that it wasn’t shadow and it wasn’t powder, and I hoped the thinner, shinier line would bring an old idea straight into the present. However, it wasn’t until this past June that I actually had the nerve to put it on. (I have to admit I was egged on by the eighties-inspired colored eye shadows François Nars himself used at the Marc Jacobs show the previous Fashion Week.) So I had my makeup artist/friend Suzy coming over to do my makeup for the CFDA Fashion Awards; I thought the dress I was wearing (DVF resort collection) would support some colored makeup on my face, and I was sick of bright lips.

So I got out the Nars liner and asked Suzy what she could do with it. She explained that it was important that it be applied in a thin line —to keep the eyeliner feeling as opposed to full-on eye shadow—and to leave the rest of my face very simple and natural—nude lips, peachy blush, and a dash of mascara. Although you can barely see it in the picture of me below, it really had a great effect. In fact, the first person to compliment me was Gucci Westman, my absolute favorite makeup artist: “Wow, Amanda. I love your eyes!”

Gucci was probably the one who got me thinking about blue makeup in the first place, when she put blue eye shadow on Drew Barrymore for a Lancôme ad back in 2005 and again at last year’s Golden Globes.

I also have to give Sarah Jessica Parker credit—she’s been a bit bolder by putting the blue liner under her eye. And then, of course, there’s my favorite supermodel of all time, Twiggy, who mixed her seventies boho braids with the overt glamour of blue eye shadow in a way that any girl would want to follow.

—Amanda Brooks, author of I Love Your Style
